InJoinery

InJoinery are a labour only contractor who coordinate the work between furniture makers and furniture fitters. They are installation specialists.

Together, over the past five years, we have developed their data processes and clarified their strategic trajectory.

In February 2020 Todd sent me this email:

Hi Ben,

I keep seeing your stamp on the websites I visit. As a small business owner working in the construction industry I think I would like to use your services.

Can you give me an idea of starting costs to see whether this is viable? Being in the first year of business, we don’t have a website or online presence at all at the moment. Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Todd Hooper

We had a call a couple of days later. Then the pandemic, then a few months later we emailed a bit.

Then in February 2022, Todd got back in touch and we booked a half-day to meet in-person in Margate. We got on well, there were things to be done, and we started speaking and meeting each week for an hour or two.

In September 2022, Todd & Isaac (first person in the office team) were keen to start building out some form of operations management system. Using Airtable, I created the structure, showed them how to use it, and they took it from there.

Over the next six months I had a light involvement as the system evolved.

During the early months of 2023, I become increasingly involved and worked into the role (still freelance) I currently inhabit: data & processes, strategic evolution of the business.

In a team-wide email in January 2024, Todd wrote:

There has also been consistent input throughout 2023 on In Joinery’s business strategy and technology in the form of Ben Edmonds. Ben has been involved in implementing all of our systems to date, he believes in the INJ way as much as anyone and without his work I would probably still be writing everyone’s hours on the back of an envelope. Thank you! He will continue to play a major role in the senior leadership team this year.

Then in April 2025, Todd summarised in a memo to the team as:

Ben Edmonds of We Sort fame continued to work throughout the year driving the improvement of systems and processes as well as wider strategic moves. Often working in the background for most of the fitting team, Ben is in most of the conversations around how we organise. In September he was fundamental in bringing in our new accounting and bookkeeping company, GrowBe, to take over from Jason (who was only really doing it as a favour to me). This has been a major developmental step for the company as we really struggled to find the right person/company for this job historically.

For what it’s worth, GrowBe and I are similar and highly complimentary. They provide finance-ops and more, are tech-forward, reliable and altogether friendly people.

There’s much more to say about the past 2 years of steady work with this impressive client. We work well together and I’m keen to share more about how that operates.

In April 2025, I rebuilt and launched the InJoinery website. This was a quick project to start with to ‘replatform’ the content management system (CMS) from Wordpress to Statamic. The previous site was difficult to edit meaning that content was stuck being outdated and often inconsistent.
